Geography and Environmental Science Program, Faculty of Geography – Gadjah Mada University, officially established through the Indonesian Directorate of Higher Education Decree (DIKTI) with registered number 221/DIKTI/Kep/96. The background of the development of this department is related to the increasing environmental issues, which are continuously become more complex from time to time. The program focuses on the interaction of lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and human activity in the planet earth.
Department of Geography and Environmental Science share vision with the Faculty of Geography and Gadjah Mada University. The vision of this department is become center oc Excelled oo Geography and Environmental Science in the international level. Since the beginning, this department always becomes reference for the implementation of similar study program in Indonesia. With the coordination from Indonesian Geography Organization (IGI) and Center of Curriculum – Indonesian Education Department, this department has major contribution of the determination of material, substance, and grading of geographic curriculum in the elementary school to the senior high school in Indonesia.
The establishment of geography study program in the new university in Indonesia, which are called as Teacher Training Institute (IKIP), also refer on the Department of Geography and Environmental Science, Faculty of Geography- Gadjah Mada University. Moreover, this faculty also became the faculty adviser for the establishment of Faculty of Geography, Muhammadiyah Surakarta University.
International collaboration with the partner university has been established by various universities, including ITC Enschede-Netherland, Cologne University-Germany, Chiba University-Japan, and University of Utrecht-Netherland. Further advancement in the international level becomes model on developing the curriculum. Therefore, this department becomes more and more advanced to reach the international level.
